Be a Traveler, Not a Tourist !

Carmacks - Fort Selkirk

11.06.2011

It's raining cats and dogs again today. My tent is wet, my boat is wet from the inside because the spray deck is not tight,

 THANKS NAUTIRAID !

Jörg also came by, he also had some problems with his boat, he had caught a hole on Lake Laberge. He drove on after a hamburger and a phone call to Germany. I will certainly meet him before the Rapids.
Nadine & Alex are also packing, they also want to go on.

In the evening, we finally set off in a light drizzle. I said goodbye to Nadine & Alex, I'm sure we'll meet up again on the way to Dawson.

We drove past Carmacks in the rain. After a few hours, the weather improved. Suddenly I saw something brown on the shore, it was a brown bear quenching its thirst with Yukon water.

Unfortunately I only had my 80mm telephoto on the camera, so I took two pictures where you could recognize the bear, albeit very small...
At the Five Finger Coal Mine I saw a red canoe and later also Jörg's olive Nautiraid.

Nadia & Markus from Switzerland and Jörg were already sitting by the fire and greeted me. The Swiss also go as far as the Bering Sea.

I first tried to get the water out of my boat, several liters of rainwater had run through the spray deck into my boat over the last few days.

Super quality gentlemen from Nautiraid ...

We spent the whole evening talking about the Yukon, a really great evening!

Around 23:30 I went into the tent and wrote my report for the day.

Nadia & Markus

                                                 12.06.2011

Around midday, we drove towards the Five Finger Rapids. They were half as wild because of the high water level. After the rapids, we all continued on our own.

The weather was very good, sunny and almost 25 degrees. Unfortunately, I hardly saw any animals due to the heat. Behind Minto I saw some mountain sheep. Unfortunately, it started to rain again, first lightly and then like buckets.

As there were hardly any suitable camps on this stretch, I drove through to Fort Selkirk. I saw another bear and two moose, but unfortunately I couldn't take any photos because it was raining too much.

At exactly 24:00 I set up camp in Fort Selkirk after exactly 104 km!

I had a lot of trouble with the boat because the rudder was far too small!

I filmed my passage through the Rapids with the W-90, but unfortunately the lens on my camera was fogged up...
