Carmacks - Whitehorse
August 29, 2009
Rest day.
Talked to some people at the campsite who are out on the Yukon River in their boats. They are really nice people.
In the evening, Dale & Samatha, the owners of the campground, invited me for a schnitzel and a few beers, thank you very much!

I got up at 6:30 and packed my tent, even dry...
It was very fresh, some clouds were gathering. When I had packed everything and was just checking my mail in the lounge, it started to rain. At first, it was just a little drizzle, but then at times it poured down like a bucket. It was probably not going to be an early start...
Around 8:30 Dale invited me for a coffee.
I stayed in the lounge until 15:00, surfing the web and chatting to a few people.
Shortly after 15:00 we left. I said goodbye to everyone and set off.
After about 5 km it started to rain again.
Suddenly I saw a black bear leisurely crossing the road, he didn't even look at me...
I really liked the landscape. Much better than the stretch from Dawson to Carmacks...
Shortly after 21:00 and after 47.9 km I pitched my tent at a lake.

Now and then, there were short showers.
Gravel surface is no problem for my trike!
Even if it's over many kilometers....
The colors are getting better and better...
The landscape is magnificent!
Rolling Hills...
The Montague Roadhouse is one of the last remaining of the former 52 roadhouses between Dawson City and Whitehorse in the Yukon.
A predecessor building was built in 1900 to supply gold prospectors with equipment and other goods during the Klondike gold rush. However, it fell victim to a fire. The successor building, which was erected not far from the old site, also burned down in 1909.
The roadhouse, which still exists today and forms the Montague Roadhouse Historic Site, was built in 1915 and served as a supply base along today's Northern Highway, which connects Whitehorse with Dawson City, until the 1950s.
Too bad, there's no more coffee for travelers here....
The Montague Roadhouse is more of historical significance than worth seeing.
Although some details are very interesting...
Beautiful atmosphere by the lake...
The play of light and the sounds of the water birds, simply brilliant...

The night at the lake was great. All night long I could hear the calls of the loons and many other birds...
Around 11:00 I started towards Whitehorse. There were a few climbs today.
The weather was good, sun mixed with clouds and dry! At the Braeburn Lodge I ordered a Breaburn Burger, what came next was almost too much, a huge piece of hamburger. But with my constant hunger I managed to finish it. The waitress was very surprised that I actually finished it...
I continued in the direction of Whitehorse. Again and again I passed beautiful little lakes and streams. There were also some forest fire areas here. As far as the eye could see, only burnt trees!
Suddenly a van stopped, the cook from the Coalmine Campground got out and gave me 4 bottles of water that he had bought especially for me in the store in Carmacks!
Super nice, thank you very much!
At Little Fox Lake I saw a sign for Fireweed honey, so I bought two jars. The taste of this honey is unique!
It was almost dark when I arrived at the big Fox Lake. The sun was setting and there was a beautiful sunset.
At the Fox Lake campground, I set up camp right by the water and then went swimming in the lake in the dark. It wasn't as cold as the streams I usually swim in, but you can't call it warm either...

Am nächsten Morgen, bei tageslicht war alles wieder nüchterner am See ...
I really like the landscape between Carmacks and Whitehorse!
What a panorama...
I just had to take a break and let it all sink in...
Simply beautiful !
Unfortunately, it burnt down a few years later!
The lodge is known for good food, but I think more for the size of the portions...
Huge portions yes, but the taste....
That's saying something when an always hungry cyclist says so...
The route ran for many kilometers through a forest fire area.
Kind of really depressing....
Endless vastness...
That would be something to paddle on...
September 1, 2009
The night was nice and quiet again, I heard loons in the night.
Finally, I was able to let my tent dry properly in the sun.
I started around 12:00 a.m. The landscape was great, the two lakes are really great, a nice place to build a cabin...
I drove to Lake Laberge, stopping at Mom's Bakery on the way. Tracie Harris bakes bread and pastries there in an outdoor oven she built herself. I went straight in and bought a loaf of bread and a pastry and drank two cups of coffee. Her house is in a fantastic location not far from Lake Laberge on a river. Her neighbor is Jo Bentfeld, the author of several books about the Yukon and the Yukon Territory.
I set up camp right next to Lake Laberge in the most glorious sunshine.
I met a couple from Germany who had paddled the Yukon from Whitehorse to Dawson. Very nice people!

Fox Lake comes into sight...
Magnificent sunset at Fox Lake !
I was well rested the next morning...
Really beautiful landscape !
In a cabin on the road to Lake Laberge, Tracie Harris bakes bread and pastries in a homemade outdoor oven. Of course, I immediately went and bought a loaf of bread, ate a pastry and drank two cups of coffee. Her neighbor is the German adventurer and writer Jo Bentfeld!
My camp is right on Lake Laberge, which I know very well from my Yukon River expeditions.
Crystal clear water but cold, but I still bathed at night....
I met Marius and Milan again shortly before Whitehorse!
September 2, 2009
Around 9:00 I started in the direction of Whitehorse. Of course, it was immediately uphill again!
Somehow the air is out of me, is it the proximity to Whitehorse, or am I simply exhausted?
Shortly after the turn-off to Whitehorse, I met Udo again, with whom I sailed the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City on my catamaran in 2006. I was really pleased to meet him again. He is traveling the Yukon with his 4x4 camper. Next year he will be traveling the Lower 48. All the best Udo and let's stay in touch!
And just 5 minutes after I said goodbye to Udo, someone stuck an apple out of a camper. It was actually Marius & Milan. They had just arrived from the Dempster Hwy. The apple came just in time, and the stout beer that followed even more so...
We arranged to meet at a coffee shop in Whitehorse. The drive there was much easier with the beer we had drunk...(LOL)
I was barely in the coffee shop when I was greeted by the fast Scotsman Fin I had met in Alaska. The world is that small...
Milan & Marius also arrived a little later, we had a coffee and talked extensively about traveling and photography. Unfortunately, the coffee shop closed, and we arranged to meet up for the evening.
I drove to the Bees Kneez Hostel. When I arrived, I was greeted happily. They said I had lost a lot of weight, but it looked good on me (LOL)
I set up my tent in the garden and then immediately disappeared into the shower.
Milan & Marius arrived around 21:00. We went to a restaurant and had a buffalo burger and a delicious beer.
We talked about traveling and photography again for a long time. A super nice evening. I'll certainly keep in touch with both of them!
I disappeared into my tent at around 24:00.
Back at the Beez Kneez Hostel in Whitehorse.
On Labor Day, everyone threw together and we had a super barbecue.
Everyone enjoyed it !
It turned out to be a great evening!
Hmm, yes, the nice women from Quebec...
